Chia Seed Oil - Superfood for your skin

Chia seeds are tiny black seeds of the Salva hispanica plant, a member of the mint family which comes from Central and South America. It is said the ancient cultures like Aztecs and Mayans used chia seeds as a source of energy. No wonder because nutritional benefits of chia seeds are impressive. They are high in fibre and high in protein and are considered to be one of the richest botanical source of omega 3 fatty acids offering more of it than flax seeds or even fish oil. They are a very good source of minerals like potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus and manganese.

The oil obtained from chia seeds is a very unique oil and it has velvety feel on the skin. Full of nutrients, fatty acids and antioxidants is beneficial for all skin types and all ages.

Let’s look closer at the most important nutrients of chia seed oil and their benefits for the skin.

As I said earlier chia seed oil is considered one of the richest botanical source of Omega 3 fatty acids and it contains an ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega 3 fatty acids and Omega 6 fatty acids which makes the oil extremely hydrating and so great for dry skin. These fatty acids help maintain good moisture levels keeping the skin plump and smooth which can help with fine lines and wrinkles for mature skin. It is believed that high levels of Omega 3 help build collagen which is the key ingredient for maintaining healthy and young looking skin.

Omega 3 fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory properties which make chia seed oil great for irritated, inflamed and itchy skin. That’s why it’s so beneficial for the skin with any type of inflammation like acne, eczema or psoriasis. It’s also perfect for baby skin as it is so gentle and will even help with nappy rashes and very dry and sensitive skin in babies.

Chia seed oil is a wonderful oil for nails, cuticles and hands as it contains minerals and vitamins like Niacin, Thiamin, Zinc, Iron and Vitamins A, B1, B2 and B3 which are essential for good health of nails and hands.

Chia seed oil is also perfect for hair conditioning. It will soften and hydrate dry and damaged hair, help with dandruff and scalp problems. Regular use of chia seed oil may stimulate the growth of thicker and stronger hair.
